| Metabolism | The sum of all life functions within an organism. |
| Respiration | The process where an organism creates energy (ATP) |
| Regulation | Organisms stay in balance by using feedback mechanisms and body systems. |
| Reproduction | Creating new organisms or new cells |
| Growth | Increasing mass and adding new cells |
| Excretion | An organism getting rid of wastes. |
| Nutrition | An organism consumes food and uses that food for energy used by all body functions. |
| Transport | Moving materials around the organism to where they are needed to maintain life. |
| Synthesis | Taking in small molecules and making larger molecules |
