Week 7 Study Guide

TermDefinition
Encode The process of using letter/sound knowledge to write. Example: a child writes the word "bat" by understanding that "b" makes the [b] sound, "a" makes the [æ] sound, and "t" makes the [t] sound
Medial Sound The middle sounds in a single-syllable word. Example: the [ʌ] sound in "bun", or the [i] sound in "street"
Metalinguistic The ability to consciously reflect on the nature of language. (Honestly, I am still confused on this one.) Example: being able to recognize that referents are not inherently connected to words
