Cell S&F

TermDefinition
Active transport Movement across a cell membrane using energy
Cell The basic unit of structure and function of living things
Cell Theory Made of 3 components: 1. Cells are the basic unit of structure & function in living things 2. Cells come from other cells 3. All living things are made of cells
Cell wall Rigid layer of carbohydrates providing support for plant cells
Chloroplast Organelle that converts sunlight energy into carbohydrates; only found in plant cells
Cytoplasm Jelly-like fluid filling cells and suspending organelles
Diffusion The passing of substances directly through the cell membrane without the use of energy or protein channels
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Organelle specializing in producing lipids and proteins for export
Eukaryotic cell Cell with a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
Golgi apparatus Organelle that specializes in sorting, modifying, and packaging cellular products for export
Hypertonic Solution high in salt; causes cells to shrink
Hypotonic Solution low in salt; causes cells to grow
Isotonic Solution containing a roughly equal amount of salt as found inside of a cell
Lysosome Organelle specializing in breaking down old or degraded cell parts
Nucleus Organelle that houses the DNA
Organelle Specialized part of the cell that has a specific function
Osmosis The passage of water through a cell membrane
Phospholipid bilayer A term used to describe the two layers of lipids that make up the cell membrane
Plasma membrane Outer border of a cell; controls what comes in and goes out
Prokaryotic cell Cell with no nucleus
Ribosome Organelle that specializes in producing proteins
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Microscope that produces black and white 3D images of the outer surface of cells
Semipermeable Describes how the cell membrane allows some substances to pass through while other substances can't
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) Microscope that produces black and white 2D images of the tiny structures inside of cells
Transport protein Protein embedded within a cell that allows molecules that can't usually pass through a membrane to pass through
Vacuole Organelle specializing in storage
Vesicle Organelle that delivers packages around the cell; "delivery vans"

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
