WI-09 Wastewater Treatment
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| stormwater | water that comes from rain or melted snow and flows on roads and land |
| runoff | water that flows over the ground, especially after rain, because it can't be absorbed into the soil |
| impervious surfaces | hard areas, like roads and rooftops, where water can't soak in and instead flows off |
| gutters | channels along the sides of streets (or roofs) that collect and carry away rainwater |
| sewage system | underground pipes that take away dirty water and waste from homes and buildings |
| floodplain | low areas near rivers or streams that can get flooded when there's a lot of rain |
| retention ponds | ponds built to collect and store rainwater temporarily to prevent flooding and allow pollutants to settle |
