| Term | Definition |

| wastewater | Water that has been used in homes, industries, and businesses that is not for reuse unless it is treated. |
| pollutants | Substances introduced into the environment that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms. |
| organic materials | Natural compounds, often referring to matter from living organisms. |
| influent | Water flowing IN to a treatment plant. |
| effluent | Liquid waste flowing OUT from a treatment plant into a river or the sea. |
| aeration | The process by which air is circulated through, mixed with, or dissolved in a liquid or substance. |
| disinfection | The process of cleaning something, especially with a chemical, to destroy bacteria. |
| biodigester | Large tank in which bacteria break down biodegradable waste material. |
| biosolids | Treated sewage sludge that is safe to use as fertilizer. |
| recycled water | water discharged from a wastewater treatment plant that can be used for some things (but is not drinkable) |
