TermDefinition
wastewater Water that has been used in homes, industries, and businesses that is not for reuse unless it is treated.
pollutants Substances introduced into the environment that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms.
organic materials Natural compounds, often referring to matter from living organisms.
influent Water flowing IN to a treatment plant.
effluent Liquid waste flowing OUT from a treatment plant into a river or the sea.
aeration The process by which air is circulated through, mixed with, or dissolved in a liquid or substance.
disinfection The process of cleaning something, especially with a chemical, to destroy bacteria.
biodigester Large tank in which bacteria break down biodegradable waste material.
biosolids Treated sewage sludge that is safe to use as fertilizer.
recycled water water discharged from a wastewater treatment plant that can be used for some things (but is not drinkable)
