Week 4 Study Guide
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Deep/Opaque Orthography | Writing systems that do not have one-to-one correspondence between phonemes and graphemes. Example: English has deep orthography—multiple graphemes correspond to many sounds, and multiple sounds correspond to many graphemes |
| Digraph | Two letters that represent one sound. There are consonant digraphs and vowel digraphs, though the term most commonly refers to consonant digraphs. Ex. In English: "sh" corresponds to [ʃ]; "th" corresponds to [θ] or [ð] |
| Complex Consonant Patterns | Consonant units occurring at the end of words determined by the preceding vowel sound. Example: The final "tch" follows the short vowel sound in fetch and scotch, whereas a final "ch" follows the long vowel sound in peach and coach |
