Bio Definitions 1.3
Textbook Definitions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chromosome | Gene-carrying structure, long double DNA strand & proteins |
| Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) | Nucleic acid composed of deoxyribnucleotides that carries genetic information, double helix w/ non-covalent bonds |
| Double Helix | The physical structure of DNA, two linked strands woven around each other |
| The Central Dogma | Flow of information only goes from DNA -> RNA -> protein or just RNA -> protein |
| Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) | Nucleic acid composed of ribnucleotides, catalytic components of ribosomes (rRNA), transforming amino acids (tRNA), & messages of code required for protein synthesis (mRNA), etc. |
| The Central Dogma | Flow of information only goes from DNA transitioning into RNA, then RNA translating into protein |
| Protein | A macromolecule made up of amino acids, major molecule in the function of a cell, DNA, RNA, & metabolism energy source, characteristic 3-D shape |
| Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) | Nucleic acid composed of a single-strand made up of ribonucleotides, catalyst component of ribosomes (rRNA), transport of amino acids (tRNA), & messenger of DNA code required for protein synthesis (mRNA) |
| Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) | Molecules that are the primary energy currency of cells, universal energy |
| Species | A group of organisms that have the ability to reproduce & create fertile offspring, 7th |
