xylem carries: water and minerals up
phloem carries: nutrients and hormones up and down, large amounts
xylem: root pressure mechanism water always pumped in xylem, cells transport ions to create a concentration gradient, forcing water upwards, can't go very high
xylem: capillary action mechanism water clings to narrow walls and climb to high parts
xylem: cohesion-tension / transpiration pull one water molecule evaporates, another replaces it and ulls along the rest of the water
pholem: mass-flow theory uses osmosis and pressure dynamics to explain transport in phloem
