Directional Terms and Planes

anterior in front of (in humans)
caudal toward the tail/butt (quadrupeds)
cranial near the head (quadrupeds)
deep away from the body surface; more internal
distal Farther from the trunk of the body
dorsal toward the back side (quadrupeds)
frontal or coronal a dissection that leaves front & back halves
inferior below (in humans)
lateral to the side
medial near the middle
midsagittal or sagittal a dissection that leaves right and left halves
posterior behind (in humans)
proximal closer to the trunk of the body
superficial closer to the surface of the body
superior on top of (in humans)
transverse a dissection that leaves top and bottom halves
ventral toward the belly side (quadrupeds)
