Directional Terms and Planes
| Term | Definition |

| anterior | in front of (in humans) |
| caudal | toward the tail/butt (quadrupeds) |
| cranial | near the head (quadrupeds) |
| deep | away from the body surface; more internal |
| distal | Farther from the trunk of the body |
| dorsal | toward the back side (quadrupeds) |
| frontal or coronal | a dissection that leaves front & back halves |
| inferior | below (in humans) |
| lateral | to the side |
| medial | near the middle |
| midsagittal or sagittal | a dissection that leaves right and left halves |
| posterior | behind (in humans) |
| proximal | closer to the trunk of the body |
| superficial | closer to the surface of the body |
| superior | on top of (in humans) |
| transverse | a dissection that leaves top and bottom halves |
| ventral | toward the belly side (quadrupeds) |
