Directional Terms

Basic anatomy Bio 201

Superior Above, toward the head, upper part
Inferior Below, away from head, toward lower part
Anterior (Ventral) At the front of the body
Posterior (Dorsal) At the backside of the body
Medial Towards midline
Lateral Away from midline
Proximal Closer to the origin or point of attachment
Distal Farther from the the origin or point of attachment
Superficial Towards or at the body surface
Deep Away from the body surface
