Week 1 Study Guide
| Term | Definition | |
|---|---|---|
| Bound Morpheme | Meaning units of language (morphemes) that cannot stand alone as a word. Example: "Eating" can be broken down into two morphemes: "eat" and "ing". "Eat" is its own word, but "ing" is not, and is therefore a bound morpheme. | |
| Schwa | A vowel sound in English that often occurs in an unstressed syllable. Example: "father" phonetically is written [fɑðəɹ]. The "ə" symbol represents the schwa sound, and corresponds to the "e" in the original word: "father". | |
| Semantics | Knowledge of the meaning underlying words. Example: Understanding the difference in meaning between the words "buy" and "purchase". |
