Biology Unit 8 Mechanisms of Evolution Vocabulary

DefinitionTerm
the change in allele frequency due to random chance; usually has a greater effect on a smaller population genetic drift
how well a species is able to reproduce in its environment fitness
change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA, resulting in errors in protein synthesis mutation

due to migration or movement of gametes, genes are transferred from one population to another gene flow
the different genes in a population gene pool

a heritable trait (structural, physiological, or behavioral) that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its specific environment adaptation
the movement of individuals leaving a population or habitat to go to another area, reducing population size and genetic diversity emigration
the movement of individuals into a population or ecosystem from anotehr area, increasing size and boosting genetic diversity immigration
the regular, seasonal, movement of individuals from one habitat to another for food, breeding, or better conditions migration
