Biology Unit 8 Mechanisms of Evolution Vocabulary

DefinitionTerm
the change in allele frequency due to random chance; usually has a greater effect on a smaller population genetic drift
how well a species is able to reproduce in its environment fitness
change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA, resulting in errors in protein synthesis mutation
process by which organisms change over time as those with traits best suited to an environment pass on their traits to the next generation natural selection
a measure of fitness that compares reproductive success between groups of individuals within a population differential reproductive success
the process in which one speices gives rise to a new and distinctly different species speciation
due to migration or movement of gametes, genes are transferred from one population to another gene flow
the different genes in a population gene pool
new genetic combinations in gametes created during meiosis, resultiing in genetic variation genetic recombination
