DNA replicationn
the process of making a copy of DNA
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can a single strand of dna stand as a template for replication? | yes it can as the strands are complimentary to each other |
| What is the first step in replication | The double helix must unwind and the bases on one strand separate from the other bases |
| What is the name of the areas where the double helix separates? | They are called replication forks due to the "Y" shape like a fork in the road |
| What is the function of the enzyme DNA Polymerase | It attaches to each strand of separated DNA and "reads" each base attaching the new complimentary base according to the base pair rule |
| When does this process stop? | When all of the Dna has been copied and the polymerases are signaled to detach |
| Do errors ever occur? | yes they do but the DNA polymerase has the ability to "proofread" the new DNA strand. It can backtrack and correct its mistake. |
| About how many errors occur? | about one error for every one BILLION nucliotides |
