Lesson 1.1 Heredity

Chromosome A tightly coiled strand of DNA
Diploid Contains a full set of genetic material
Fertilisation The fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote
Gamete A sex cell i.e., an ovum (female) or sperm (male)
Haploid Contains half set of genetic material
Heredity The passing of traits or characteristics from parents to offspring
Ovum Female sex cell; also known as an egg
Sperm Male sex cell
Meiosis Complex cell division that produces gametes (sex cells)
Predisposition The increased likelihood of developing a disease or condition
Gene A segment of DNA, the basic functional unit of heredity
Genome An organism's entire set of DNA
Genotype The genetic make up of an organism, or the genetic code for a gene
Phenotype The observable or physical expression of a genotype
Nucleotide Building block of DNA (adenine, guanine, thymine, or cytosine)
