| Chromosome | A tightly coiled strand of DNA |
| Diploid | Contains a full set of genetic material |
| Fertilisation | The fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote |
| Gamete | A sex cell i.e., an ovum (female) or sperm (male) |
| Haploid | Contains half set of genetic material |
| Heredity | The passing of traits or characteristics from parents to offspring |
| Ovum | Female sex cell; also known as an egg |
| Sperm | Male sex cell |
| Meiosis | Complex cell division that produces gametes (sex cells) |
| Predisposition | The increased likelihood of developing a disease or condition |
| Gene | A segment of DNA, the basic functional unit of heredity |
| Genome | An organism's entire set of DNA |
| Genotype | The genetic make up of an organism, or the genetic code for a gene |
| Phenotype | The observable or physical expression of a genotype |
| Nucleotide | Building block of DNA (adenine, guanine, thymine, or cytosine) |
