TermDefinition
Prokaryote Single celled organism without a nucleus or membrane bound organelles
Contagious Sickness can spread from one person to another
Symptoms Signs that the body is not in homeostasis or sick
Antibiotics Medicine that helps kill living germs like bacteria
Dehydration Lack of water in the body that can lead to death
Digestive System Responsible for breaking down solid food into useable nutrients
Digestion Chemical and physical breakdown of solid food
Stomach Organ that holds food and mixes it with acid and enzymes to break it down into a liquid or paste
Small Intestine Organ where most of the digestion happens, and your body absorbs the nutrients from the food here
Large Intestine Organ that absorbs water from the food leftover from small intestine and forms the waste which your body then removes
Muscular system Responsible for movement through contractions of muscle fibers
Contraction flexing a muscle
Smooth muscle Muscles found in the interior organs (such as stomach, intestines, blood vessels ) except the heart
Cardiac muscle Heart muscle that pumps blood throughout the body
Skeletal muscle Muscle attached to the bones used to move arms, legs, and torso
Excretory system Responsible for moving waste (solid, liquid, and gas) through different means
Excretion Process of removing something
Circulatory system Responsible for carrying, transporting, or delivering nutrients and oxygen to cells as well as removing waste from cells through blood
Blood vessels Organs that allow blood to circulate throughout the body
Immune system Responsible for fighting off disease and foreign invaders, as well as heal injuries in order to keep the body in homeostasis
White blood cells (WBC) Cells that fight and protect against illness or infection
