Succession & Symbiosis

Ecological Succession The gradual process of an ecosystem changing over time
Primary Succession Starts with rock
Secondary Succession Starts over with soil, like after a forest fire
Pioneer Organism Lichens and moss who break down rock and create soil, the first to live in a rock ecosystem
Climax Community The ecosystem that is at the end of succession. It is stable
Overpopulation Above carrying capacity, causes destruction
Niche The role an organism plays in its habitat
Symbiosis Two species live closely with one +
Mutualism Both gain ++
Commensalism One gains, the other unaffected +0
Parasitism One gains, the other loses +-
