| Ecological Succession | The gradual process of an ecosystem changing over time |
| Primary Succession | Starts with rock |
| Secondary Succession | Starts over with soil, like after a forest fire |
| Pioneer Organism | Lichens and moss who break down rock and create soil, the first to live in a rock ecosystem |
| Climax Community | The ecosystem that is at the end of succession. It is stable |
| Overpopulation | Above carrying capacity, causes destruction |
| Niche | The role an organism plays in its habitat |
| Symbiosis | Two species live closely with one + |
| Mutualism | Both gain ++ |
| Commensalism | One gains, the other unaffected +0 |
| Parasitism | One gains, the other loses +- |
