Matter & Energy in Ecosystems

TermDefinition
ecosystem the living organisms in an area and the non-living (abiotic) aspects of the environment
scientific model a representation or description designed to make a particular part/feature of the world easier to understand
feeding level the position an organism occupies on a food web
energy the ability to do work or cause change
Law of Conservation of Energy energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form into another
Law of Conservation of Mass mass is neither created nor destroyed in ordinary chemical and physical changes
scientific theory explains why something happens
scientific law explains what will happen
autotroph organisms that produce their own food
heterotroph organisms that get energy by eating other organisms
producer an organism that transforms energy from the Sun and uses carbon dioxide and water to make food
consumer an organism that must consume other organisms for nutrients
primary consumer an organism that gets its energy by feeding on producers in the food chain
secondary consumer an animal that eats primary consumers
tertiary consumer an organism that gets its energy by eating secondary consumers
food chain a single, linear path showing the flow of energy from the Sun to a producer and through different levels of consumers
food web overlapping food chains with different pathways to show the flow of energy in an ecosystem
decomposer organisms such as bacteria and fungi that break down the remains of dead plants and animals without the need for internal digestion
matter anything that takes up space and has mass
mass amount of matter something has
geosphere Earth's rock, minerals, ground
biosphere living or once-living things on Earth
hydrosphere liquid water on Earth
cryosphere frozen water on Earth
atmosphere air/gas above the surface of Earth)
precipitation rain or snow in the water cycle
condensation water turning from a gas in the air to liquid when it comes in contact with a cool surface
evaporation conversion of water from a liquid to a gas, contributing to the movement of water from Earth's surface to the atmosphere
infiltration water moving into the ground from ground or rainwater
photosynthesis a chemical reaction during which plants convert radiant energy from the Sun to chemical energy; the reaction converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar (glucose) and oxygen
carbon dioxide a gas released during cellular respiration; used by plants during photosynthesis
cellular respiration the process of obtaining energy from the breaking of chemical bonds in nutrients
glucose sugar (produced during photosynthesis)
byproduct an additional product of a process
oxygen a gas released by plants during photosynthesis; used during cellular respiration
independent variable the one thing a scientist manipulates or tests on purpose during an experiment
dependent variable the results that are measured/observed during an experiment
constants factors during an experiment that are controlled so that they don't affect the dependent variable
empirical evidence the cumulative body acquired of observation or experimentation in which scientific explanation is based
herbivore an organism that consumes only plants
carnivore an animal that eats other animals
omnivore an organism that eats both plants and animals

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
