Bio/Int. 2-Lesson 15

Biotechnology

TermDefinition
Biotechnology the research/development of ways to keep organisms healthier longer
Recombinant DNA technology the isolation of a specific gene, engineering bacteria to include these genes into its DNA, and then having the bacteria reproduce its DNA- including the new gene that has been inserted
Selective Breeding a method of improving a species by allowing only those individual organisms with desired characteristics to produce the next generation
Genetic Engineering isolation, manipulation, and reintroduction of DNA into cells or organisms to then express a specific protein, the goal is to introduce new physical or physiological characteristics to an organism
Cloning a process where many copies of a gene of interest are made each time a host reproduces its DNA
PCR Technique a simple and fast way of copying very small amounts of DNA- down to a gene
Bioethics the study of the ethical implications of biological research and applications
DNA Fingerprinting analysis of sections of DNA that have little or no known function, but vary widely from one individual to another in order to identify individuals
Gel Electrophoresis procedure used to separate and analyze DNA fragments by placing a mixture of DNA fragments at one end of a porous gel and applying an electrical voltage to the gel to then separate the fragments by length
Human Genome Project an effort to locate and analyze the nucleotide sequence of all of the human genes contained in our DNA

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
