Life Processes
NCERT CHAPTER 6 (Terms)
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Nutrition | The process of taking in food by an organism and its utilization by the body for life processes |
Respiration | The process by which food is burnt in the cells of the body with the help of oxygen to release energy |
Transportation | The process by which food, water, air or waste products are transported from one part of the body to another |
Excretion | The process of removal of waste products from the body |
Autotropic Nutrition | The nutrition by which an organism makes its own food with simple inorganic substances like CO2 and H2O in the presence of Sunlight and Chlorophyll |
Heterotrophic Nutrition | The nutrition in which an organism gets its food from plants directly or indirectly |
Saprophytic Nutrition | The nutrition in which organisms get their food from dead and decaying organisms which the break down outside their body and then absorb it |
Parasitic Nutrition | The nutrition which involves organisms getting their food from living organisms (host) without killing them |
Holozoic Nutrition | The nutrition in which organism get their food directly and the absorb it |
Photosynthesis | The process by which a plant prepares food by using CO2 and H2O in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, the food prepared is carbohydrates and it is stored in the form of starch (Oxygen is also released in this process). |
Chlorophyll | The green pigment present in leaves When observing the cross-section of a leaf we will notice green dot like structures called chloroplasts, these contain Chlorophyll. |
Stomata | Tiny pores used to exchange gases, each stoma ha two pairs of guard cells which controls the opening and closing of the stomatal pore. When a guard cell gains water it swells and the pore opens and when they lose water, they shrink and the pore closes. |
Enzymes | Enzymes are biological catalysts, which are almost always proteins. hey speed up the rate of specific chemical reactions that take place inside the cell. The enzymes are not destroyed during this process and can be used again and again. |
Ingestion | Process of intake of solid/liquid food via mouth |
Digestion | Conversion of complex, insoluble and non-absorbable food into a simple , soluble, absorbable form using various enzymes |
Absorption | Entry of digested food molecules (nutrients) into blood |
Assimilation | Utilization of nutrients for body functions |
Egestion | Removal of fecal matter (waster products) via anus (defection) |
