Bio/Int. 2-Lesson 11
Photosynthesis/Chemosynthesis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Photosynthesis | process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to power chemical reactions that convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches |
| Chlorophyll | green pigment common to all photosynthetic organisms, absorbs all wavelengths of visible light except green |
| Light-Dependent Process of Photosynthesis | process by which chlorophyll captures and converts light energy into ATP and NADPH, also splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen ions |
| Light-Independent Process of Photosynthesis | occurs when ATP and NADPH are used to form carbohydrates (glucose) |
| Chemosynthesis | process of making carbohydrates (glucose) without the use of sunlight, usually occurs deep within the ocean |
