What are the percentages of the 4 components? Plasma=55% WBC=less then 1% RBC=45% Platelets=less then 1%
What are the functions of red blood cells? To transport oxygen from the lungs around the body
What are the functions of white blood cells? To fight infection and produce antibodies to kill the micro-organisms
What are the functions of platelets? To clot our blood-form scabs
Give the structure of plasma, RBCs, and WBCs Plasma-straw colored liquid RBCs-Biconcave shape, contain haemoglobin (red pigment) WBCs-no definite shape, nucleus
What are the 3 different blood vessels? Arteries, veins, and capillaries
What do AA, CC, and VAT help remember when studying blood vessels? AA-Arteries away (arteries carry blood away from the heart) CC-capillaries connect (capillaries connect arteries and veins VAT-Veins always towards (veins carry blood towards the heart)
What are the structural properties of arteries? Thick walls (under more pressure then veins) Narrow lumen No valves
What are the structural properties of veins? Thin walls (not under much pressure) Wide lumen Valves to prevent backflow)
What are the structural properties of capillaries? One cell thick
How many chambers are there in the heart? 4
What are the 4 chambers? Right and left ventricle and right and left atrium
What is bigger ventricles or atriums? Ventricles
Which wall of the heart is thicker, why? Left, it pumps blood to the whole body
What divides the heart into to sides? The septum
What is the name of the muscle that surrounds the heart? The cardiac muscle
What side of the heart is oxygenated and what side is deoxygenated? Left=Oxygenated Right=Deoxygenated
What colors represent oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood? Blue=oxygenated Red=deoxygenated
What is the function of the vena cava? To transport deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart
What is the function of the Pulmonary artery? To transport deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
What is the function of the Pulmonary vein? To transport oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
What is the function of the Aorta? To transport oxygenated blood from the heart to the body
