What is Life?

| Unicellular | describing an organism composed of only one cell |
| Multicellular | describing an organism composed of more than one cell |
| Asexual Reproduction | process which produces offspring identical to a single parent |
| Sexual Reproduction | process which produces offspring dissimilar to either of the two parents |
| Photosynthesis | process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy from the sun to power chemical reactions that convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and food- in the form of sugars and starches |
| Autotroph | organism that obtains its energy from the sun through the process of photosynthesis, also called a producer |
| Heterotroph | organism that obtains its energy from the body of another organism, also called a consumer |
| Homeostasis | process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment |
| DNA | physical carrier of inheritance and genetic information |
| Evolution | the change of inherited characteristics within a species over time |
| Adaptation | inherited characteristic that increases an organism’s chance of survival |
| Cell Theory | the idea that all living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things, and new cells are produced from existing cells |
