What is Life?

Unicellular describing an organism composed of only one cell
Multicellular describing an organism composed of more than one cell
Asexual Reproduction process which produces offspring identical to a single parent
Sexual Reproduction process which produces offspring dissimilar to either of the two parents
Photosynthesis process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy from the sun to power chemical reactions that convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and food- in the form of sugars and starches
Autotroph organism that obtains its energy from the sun through the process of photosynthesis, also called a producer
Heterotroph organism that obtains its energy from the body of another organism, also called a consumer
Homeostasis process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
DNA physical carrier of inheritance and genetic information
Evolution the change of inherited characteristics within a species over time
Adaptation inherited characteristic that increases an organism’s chance of survival
Cell Theory the idea that all living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things, and new cells are produced from existing cells
