Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the 3 functions of the nervous system? | 1.sensation 2.integration 3.motor output |
what is sensation used for? | detecting changes in the environment |
what is integration used for? | 1. Evaluates new information 2. Makes decisions |
what is motor output used for? | Signals a response for muscles to move or glands to secrete hormones |
what are the cells that carry information through the nervous system? | neurons |
what are bundles of fibers composed of neurons that use electrical and chemical signals to transmit sensory and motor information? | nerves |
what is the message that a neuron carries? | nerve impulse |
how does a never impulse travel? 3 steps | 1. moves through a neuron from the dendrite to the cell body to the axon 2. crosses the synapse (neurotransmitters carry the impulse across the gap) 3. travels through the next neuron |
what are the 4 structures? | 1. brain 2. cerebrum 3. cerebellum 4. brain stem |
what are the functions of the brain? | sensation and intellectual activity |
what are the functions of the cerebellum? | coordinates movement & regulates temperature |
what are the functions of the cerebellum? | maintains posture & voluntary muscle movement |
what are the functions of the brain stem? | send signals & connects cerebrum with spinal cord |
what are the 3 functions of the spinal cord? | 1. bundle of nerves in the spine 2. sends signals to the body 3. sends signals back to the brain |
what are the 2 divisions of the nervous system? | 1. central nervous system (CNS) 2. peripheral nervous system (PNS) |
what does the CNS consist of? | brain, spinal cord, protected by skull and vertebrae |
what does the PNS consist of? | all nerves outside the CNS |
