cell theory idea that all living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things, and new cells are produced from existing cells
prokaryotic cell A type of cell lacking a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles
eukaryotic cell A type of cell with a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles.
cytoplasm A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended
cytoskeleton A network of fibers that holds the cell together, helps the cell to keep its shape, and aids in movement
organelles Structures specialized to perform distinct processes within a cell.
plasma membrane a microscopic membrane of lipids and proteins that forms the external boundary of the cytoplasm of a cell and that regulates the passage of molecules in and out of the cytoplasm.
endosymbiotic theory theory that eukaryotic cells formed from a symbiosis among several different prokaryotic organisms
cell wall A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms.
central vacuole A large vacuole that rests at the center of most plant cells and is filled with a solution that contains a high concentration of solutes.
chloroplast An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs
mitochondria an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur.
centriole structure in an animal cell that helps to organize cell division
lysosome cell organelle filled with enzymes needed to break down certain materials in the cell
