Mitosis
Part C
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is interphase? | - the cell is either growing and developing or dividing into 2 daughter cells |
| What is growth phase? | - cell is growing and developing its organelles - 2 growth phases |
| What is Synthesis phase? | - the chromosomes replicate in the nucleus 2x chromosomes |
| What is Mitosis? | - nucleus dividing into cells |
| What is prophase? | - centrioles move to opposite poles - nuclear envelope disappears - chromosomes coil up into visible structures |
| What is metaphase? | - spindle fibres attach on to the chromosomes and line them up in the middle - spindle fibres attach on to the centromere |
| What is anaphase? | - spindle fibres retract and pull 1/2 the chromosomes toward each centriole (23 chromosomes) |
| What is telophase? | - spindle fibres are back in the centrioles - nuclear envelopes start to form back around both sets of chromosomes -chromosomes uncoil to become chromatin |
| What are cell check points? | - there are 3 cell check points - if the cell does not pass these check points, it is repaired or destroyed |
| What is cytokinesis | |
| What is apoptosis? | - cells die when its too old to function - process is carried out by lysosomes - has a specialized function |
| What are cancer cells? | - can undergo mitosis an unlimited number of times - does not function normally, DNA becomes mutated by genetics, smoking etc. |
| What is a tumor? | - cells that dump together due to an uncontrollable urge to divide |
