Cells and Diffusion
Cells and their definitions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction |
| Cell Membrane | allows certain molecules to go in/out of the cell, molecules diffuse in/out of a cell, made up of 2 phosphorus layers (interconnected) |
| Cell Wall | Supports/protects the cell, does not allowed molecules in or out |
| Chromosomes | proteins with DNA that have coded information for making molecules |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | produces/stores proteins |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | produces/stores fats and oils |
| Golgi Bodies | modifies and packages proteins from rough ER with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | is attached to and helps rough endoplasmic reticulum make proteins |
| Centrioles | helps with mitosis (cell division), spindle fibers come from here |
| Mitochondria | converts sugar into energy for the cell |
| Cytoplasm | fluid in the cell (allows organelles to move around) |
| Vacuole | stores water, minerals and vitamins, much bigger in plant cells |
| Lysosomes | breaks down; food, invading bacteria and old/damaged organelles |
| Chloroplasts | uses sunlight to make its own food; photosynthesis |
| Diffusion | movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Photosynthesis | CO2+H20+light= Sugar+O2 |
| Osmosis | movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water |
| Permeable | allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| Semi-Permeable | allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell-membrane) |
| Non-permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell-wall) |
