PART A
Cells & Diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| diffusion | movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| osmosis | movement of water molecules from areas of high concentration of water to low concentration of water |
| permeable | allows any molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| semi-permeable | allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| non-permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| smooth endoplasmic reticulum | produces and stores fat and oils |
| nucleolus | produces ribosomes |
| chromosomes | proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules |
| nucleus | controls the growth and reproduction of the cell |
| ribosomes | helps Rough ER make proteins |
| mitochondria | converts sugar into energy for the cell |
| cell membrane | allows certain molecules to go in and out of the cell |
| cytoplasm | fluid in the cell's allows organelles to move around |
| rough endoplasmic reticulum | produces and stores proteins |
| golgi bodies (apparatus) | modifies and packages proteins with enzymes |
| vacuoles | stores minerals, water & vitamins |
| Lysomes | breaks down food, invading bacteria & old damaged organelles |
| Centrioles | spindle fibers come from here |
| Chloroplasts | uses sunlight to make its own food |
| Cell Wall | supports and protects the cell, not allowing any molcules in or out |
