Cells and Diffusion
Part A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all the activities of the cell; growth and reproduction. |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules to go in our out of the cell. The molecules diffuse in or out of a cell. |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell; does not allow molecules in or out. |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough ER) | Produces and stores protein. |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth ER) | Produces and stores fats & oils. |
| Golgi Bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from thee Rough ER with enzymes. |
| Ribosomes | Helps Rough ER make protein; attached to the Rough ER. |
| Centrioles | Helps with cell division (spindle fibres come from this). |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy for the cell. |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid in the cell; allows organelles to move around. |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals, and vitamins (much bigger in plants). |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invades bacteria and old/damaged. |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food (photosynthesis). |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration. |
| Osmosis | Movement of water from high concentration of water to low concentration of water. |
| Permeable | Allows any molecules to diffuse across membrane. |
| Semi-permeable | Allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane. |
| Non-permeable | Allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell wall). |
