cells and diffusion
Part A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Diffusion | the movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Nucleus | Controls all the activities in the cell, including and growth and reproduction |
| Cell Membrane | Protects the cell, allows molecules to diffuse in and out of the cell, made up of 2 phosphorus layers interconnected |
| Cell wall | Supports/protects the cell; does not allow molecules in or out |
| Chromosomes | Protiens with DNA that have coded information for making molecules |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and Stores Protiens |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and Stores Fats and oils |
| Golgi Bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from rough ER with enzymes |
| Nucleolus | produce and assemble the cell's ribosomes |
| centriole | Helps with mitosis (cell division) ; spindle fibres come from here |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria, and old/damaged organelles |
| cytoplasm | fluid that runs throughout the cell; allows organelles to move around |
| Ribosomes | Attatched to Rough ER , helps rough ER make protiens |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy for the cell |
| Vacuole | Stores vitamins, minerals, and water; much larger in a plant cell |
| Chloroplasts | uses sunlight to make its own food; photosynthesis |
| Osmosis | movement of water molecules from high concentration to low concentration of water |
| Photosynthesis | H20 + C02 + light ---> sugar + 02 |
| Permeable | allows any molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| Semi- Permeable | allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell- membrane) |
| Non-Permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across wall (cell-wall) |
