Cells & Diffusion
Part A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Golgi Apparatus | Modifies and packages proteins from rough ER with enzymes. |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy. |
| Nucleus | Controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction |
| Cell Membrane | allows certain molecules to go in or out of a cell, made up of 2 phosphorus layers interconnected. |
| Cell Wall | Supports & Protects the cell; does not allows molecules in or out. Only found in Plant Cells. |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and Stores Proteins. |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and Stores fats / oils. |
| Ribosomes | helps rough ER make proteins, is attached to the rough ER. |
| Centrioles | Helps with cell division (Mitosis), spindle fibers come from here. Only found in animal cells. |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid inside the cell; allows organelles to move around |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals & vitamins, Much bigger in Plant cells |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria, old damaged cells. Only in Animal cells. |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food, Photosynthesis. CO2 + H20 + light --> Sugar + O2 |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low. |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water. |
| Permeable | Allows any Molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| Semi - Permeable | Allows some molecules across the membrane |
| Non - Permeable | No Molecules allowed to cross |
