Cells and Diffusion
Part A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all the activities of the cell; growth and reproduction (both) |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules to go in and out of the cell. Molecules diffuse in or out of the cell made up of 2 phosphorus layers interconnected. (both) |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell and does not allow molecules in or out. (plant) |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules. (both) |
| RER - Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | produces and stores protein. (both) |
| SER - Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | produces and stores fat. (both) |
| Golgi bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from RER with enzymes. (both) |
| Ribosomes | Helps the RER makes protein and is attached to the RER. (both) |
| Centrioles | Helps with cell division and the spindle fibers come from here |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy for the cell. (both) |
| Cytoplasm | The fluid in the cell that allows organelles to move around. (both) |
| Vacuole | Stores water minerals and vitamins, and its much bigger in a plant cell. (both) |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria and old/damaged cells. (animal) |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food. (plant) |
| Diffusion | movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration. |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water. |
| Permeable | Allows any molecules to diffuse across membranes. |
| Semi-permeable | allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane. |
| non-permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane. |
