Cells & Diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus - Both | Controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction (Ex. Brain) |
| Cell Membrane - Both | Allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell, and is made up of 2 interconnected phosphorus layers . (Ex. Air Filter) |
| Chromosomes - Both | Proteins that contains DNA which has coded information for making molecules. (Ex. DNA) |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum - Both | Produces and stores protein (Ex. Assembly Line) |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum - Both | Produces and stores fats and oils (Ex. Assembly Line) |
| Golgi Bodies - Both | Modifies and packages protein from Rough Endoplasmic reticulum with enzymes (Ex. Packages) |
| Ribosomes - Both | Helps Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum make proteins, and is attached to it (Ex. Individuals working on an assembly line) |
| Mitochondria - Both | Converts sugar into energy (Ex. Power Plant) (Note. cells that have too much sugar, get stored as fat) |
| Cytoplasm - Both | Fluid in cells; allows organelles to move around (Ex. Swimming Pool) |
| Vacuole - Both | Stores water, minerals, and vitamins (Ex. Water Tower) (Note. MUCH bigger in plants) |
| Centrioles - Animals | Helps with cell division (mitosis) (Ex. Spider web) (Note. Spindle fibers come from here) |
| Lysosomes - Animals | Breaks down food, invading bacteria, and old damaged organelles (Ex. Executioner) (Note. If stopped working, causes Cancer) |
| Cell Wall - Plant | Supports and Protects the cell; does not allow molecules in or out (Ex. Brick Wall) (Note. Produces own energy, so animals don't have a cell wall) |
| Chloroplasts - Plant | Uses sunlight to make its own food (Ex. Solar Panel) (Note. Photosynthesis: (CO2 + H2O + light - - > Sugar + O2) |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules from high concentration to low concentration of water |
| Permeable | Allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| Semi-permeable | Allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane (Ex. Cell membrane) |
| Non-permeable | Allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane (Ex. Cell Wall) |
| Nucleolus - Both | Makes Ribosomes |
