Cells and Diffusion
cells and diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction |
| Cell Membrane | allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell molecule diffuse in or out of the cell mad up of 2 phosphorus layers interconnected |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell; does not alllow moleccules in or out |
| Chromosomes | proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules |
| Rough Endoplastic Reticulum | Produces and stores proteins |
| Smooth Endoplastic Reticulum | produces fats and stores oil |
| Golgi bodies/apparatus | Modifies and packages proteins from Rough Endoplastic Reticulum with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | helps Rough Endoplastic Reticulum make protein is attactched to Rough Endoplastic Reticulum |
| Centrioles (only animal cell) | helps with cell division (mitosis) Spindle fibres come from here |
| Mitochondria | converts sugar to energy |
| Cytoplasm | fluids in the cell; allows organelles to move around |
| Vacuole | stores waters minerals and vitamins much bigger in plant cells |
| Lysosomes (only in Animal cells) | - Breaks down : - food - Invading bacteria _Old/damaged organelles |
| Chloroplasts(Plant only) | - uses sunlight to make its own food (photosynthesis) -photosynthesis CO2+H2O+light = C6H12O6 (sugar) + O2 |
| diffusion | - movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| osmosis | movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water |
| permeable | allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| semi-permeable | allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| non-permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane |
