Cells and Diffusion
Part A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction Found in plant and animal cells |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell Molecules diffuse in or out of a cell Made up of phosphorus layers interconnected Found in plant and animal cells |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell, doesn't let molecules in or out Found in plant cells |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information making molecules Found in plant and animal cells |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores protein Found in plant and animal cells |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores fats and oils Found in plant and animal cells |
| Golgi Bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from the rough ER with enzymes Found in plant and animal cells |
| Ribosomes | Helps Rough Er make proteins, attached to rough ER Found in plant and animal cells |
| Centrioles | Produces spindle fibres, helps with cell division (mitosis) Found in animal cells |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy through cellular respiration Found in plant and animal cells |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid in the cells, allows organelles to move around Found in plant and animal cells |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals, vitamins Found in plant and animal cells , much bigger in plant cells |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria, old/damaged cells Found in animal cells |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food through photosynthesis Found in plant cells |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Permeable | Allows any molecules to diffuse across the membrane |
| Semi-permeable | Allows certain molecules to diffuse across the membrane (cell membrane) |
| Non-permeable | Allows no molecules to diffuse across the membrane (cell wall) |
| Osmosis | Movement of water from high concentration of water to low concentration of water Higher concentration outside the cell to lower concentration inside the cell |
