Cells and Diffusion
Part A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | controls activities and growth and reproduction of cells |
| Cell membrane | allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell molecules diffuse in or out of cell made up of 2 phosphorous layers interconnected |
| Cell wall | supports and protects the cell does not allow molecules in or out only in plants |
| Chromosomes | proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules |
| Rough Endoplasmin Reticulum | produces and stores protein |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | produces and stores fats and oils |
| Golgi Bodies | modifies and packages proteins from rough endoplasmic reticulum with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | helps rough endoplascmic reticulum make protein |
| Centrioles | helps with cell division (mitosis) spindal fibres come from here only in animals |
| Mitochondria | converts energy into sugar |
| Cytoplasm | fluid inside of cell which allows organelles to move around |
| Vacuole | stores water minerals and vitamins much bigger in plant cells than animal cells |
| Lysosomes | breaks down food, invading bacteria and old/damaged organelles only in animals |
| Chloroplasts | uses sunlight to make its own food only in plants |
| Diffusion | movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Osmosis | movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to lower concentration of water higher concentration inside the cell to lower concentration inside the cell |
| Permeable | allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| Semi-permeable | allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| Non-permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane |
