Cells and Diffusion
Part A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Contains all activities of the cell. Includes growth and function. |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules in or out of the cell. Molecules diffuse in or out of the cell. Made up of a 2 phosphorus layers interconnected. |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects cell does not allow molecules to go in or out of cell. |
| Chromosones | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for molecules. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Has the function of storing and producing products. |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Has the function of storing fats and also oils |
| Golgi Bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from rough ERs with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | Helps rough ERs to make proteins, attached to the Rough ER. |
| Centrioles | Helps with cell division, where spindel fibres come from. |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy for the cell. |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid in the cell. Allows organelles to move around. |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals and vitamins. Much bigger inside of plant cells. |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down; food, bacteria, and old / damaged organelles |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food, CO2 + H2O + light = sugar |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration. |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water. |
| Permeable | Allows any molecule to diffuse |
| Semi-permeable | Allows certain molecules to diffuse |
| Non-permeable | Allows no molecule to diffuse across the membrane |
