cells & diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all activities of the cell, growth and reproduction |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell, which diffuse out of the cell. Made up of 2 phospholipid layers interconnected. |
| Cell Wall | Supports & protects the cell; doesn't allow molecules in or out. (Only in plant cells) |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded info for making molecules. |
| Rough endoplasmic reticulum | Produces & stores proteins |
| Smooth endoplasmic reticulum | Produces & stores fats and oils |
| Golgi bodies | Modifies & packages proteins from rough E.R with enzyme |
| Ribosomes | Helps rough E.R make proteins; is attached to rough E.R |
| Centrioles | Helps with the cell divisions (mitosis). Spindle fibres come from there |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid in the cell : allows organelles to move around |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals & vitamins, bigger in plant cells |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria, old damaged organelles |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food. (photosynthesis) CO2 + H20 + light --> sugar + O2 |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules form areas of high concentration to low concentration. |
| Permeable | Allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| Semi-permeable | Allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane. Ex. cell membrane, skin |
| Non-permeable | Allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane. Ex. cell wall. |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water. |
