Notes from unit.3 ch. 1
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Diffusion | Molecules move from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
Osmosis | Water moves from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
Permeable | All molecules are able to cross the membrane |
Semi-Permeable | Some molecules are able to cross the membrane |
Non-Permeable | No molecules are able to cross the membrane |
Nucleus | Controls all activities of the cell; this includes growth and reproduction |
Cell Membrane | The part of a cell that allows certain molecules to go in and out of it (semi-permeable), and contains two phospholipid layers interconnected |
Cell Wall | The part of a cell that supports and protects the cell and is non-permeable |
Chromosomes | The part of a cell that has proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules |
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough ER) | The part of a cell that produces and stores proteins |
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth ER) | The part of a cell that produces and stores fats and oils |
Golgi Bodies | The part of a cell that modifies and packages proteins from Rough ER with enzymes |
Ribosomes | The part of a cell that helps Rough ER make proteins |
Centrioles | The part of a cell that helps with cell diffusion and stores the spindle fibers |
Mitochondria | The part of a cell that converts sugar into energy for the cell |
Cytoplasm | The part of a cell that fluid in the cell which allows organisms in a cell to move around |
Vacuole | The part of a cell that store water, minerals and vitamins |
Lysosomes | The part of a cell that breaks down food, invading bacteria and old/damaged organelles |
Chloroplast | The part of a cell that turns sunlight into food |
