PART A: Cells etc.
PART A for study guide ( cells & diffusions)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | controls all activities of the cell , growth & reproduction. |
| Cell Membrane | allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell, molecules diffuse in or out of the cell, made up of 2 phosphorous layers. |
| Cell Wall | supports and protects the cell, doesn't let molecules in and out. |
| Chromosomes | proteins that contain DNA, which has coded information for making molecules. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | produces and stores protein. |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | produces and stores fat and oil. |
| Golgi Bodies | modifies and packages protein, attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum. |
| Ribosomes | helps rough endoplasmic reticulum to make protein, attached to endoplasmic reticulum. |
| Mitochondria | converts sugar into energy. |
| Cytoplasm | fluid in cells, allows organelles to move around. |
| Vacuole | stores water, minerals & vitamins, much larger in plant cells. |
| Lysosome | breaks down - food - invading bacteria - old / damaged cell |
| Chloroplast | uses sunlight to make its own food, photosynthesis ( CO2 + H2O + light -> sugar + O2 |
| Centrioles | helps with cell division, spindle fibres come from here. |
| Diffusion | movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Osmosis | movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water . |
| Permeable | allows any molecule to diffuse across the membrane. |
| Semi-Permeable | allows certain molecules to diffuse across the membrane. |
| Non-Permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across the membrane. |
