Probability The likelihood of an event occurring
Producers Organisms that produce their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
Product The result of a chemical reaction
Proliferation The rapid increase in the number or spread of something
Prophase The first stage of mitosis, where chromosomes condense and the nuclear envelope breaks down
Protein A complex molecule made up of amino acids, essential for life functions
protein synthesis The process of making proteins from mRNA instructions
Punnett square A diagram used to predict the outcomes of genetic crosses
pyruvate (pyruvic acid) A three-carbon compound produced from glucose during glycolysis
Ratio The relationship between two quantities
Reactant A substance that undergoes change in a chemical reaction
Reaction The process of substances undergoing change in a chemical reaction
Rearrangement A change in the arrangement or order of something
Recessive An allele that is only expressed when present in the homozygous state
Replication The process of copying DNA
reproductive isolation The condition where members of different populations cannot interbreed
Respiration The process of releasing energy from food molecules
Ribose A sugar molecule found in RNA
Ribosome The cellular organelle where protein synthesis occurs
RNA a nucleic acid molecule involved in protein synthesis and gene regulation
Rough endoplasmic reticulum An organelle involved in protein synthesis, studded with ribosomes
rRNA Ribosomal RNA, a type of RNA that forms part of the ribosome
sedimentary layers Layers of sediment deposited over time, providing a record of past environments
Sedimentation The process of settling or deposition of particles from a liquid or suspension
selective pressure The environmental factors that influence the survival and reproduction of organisms
sex linked A trait associated with a gene located on a sex chromosome
sexual reproduction Reproduction involving the fusion of gametes from two parents
sexual selection The process where certain traits increase an individual's chance of mating
simple sugar A carbohydrate consisting of a single sugar molecule
sister chromatid One of the two identical copies of a chromosome produced by DNA replication
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum An organelle involved in lipid synthesis and detoxification, lacking ribosomes
solar energy Energy from the sun, converted into electricity or heat
Solution A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
somatic cell Any cell of a living organism other than reproductive cells
