Food Tests (Section 2)
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is the test for glucose? | Benedict's Test |
What is the test for starch? | Iodine Solution |
What is the test for proteins? | Biuret Test |
What is the test for lipids? | Sudan III Test |
Describe the Benedict's Test | 1 Transfer 5cm3 of food sample to test tube 2 Set water bath to 75 degrees 3 Add 10 drops of Benedicts solution to tube 4 Leave test tube in water bath for 5 mins 5 Test tube turns from blue to green/yellow in low glucose conc and brick red in high |
Describe the test for starch | 1. Transfer 5cm3 of food sample into test tube 2. Add few drops of iodine solution and gently shake 3. If starch is present solution will turn from BROWN-ORANGE to BLACK/BLUE-BLACK |
Describe the Biuret Test | 1. Transfer 2cm3 of food sample to test tube 2. Add 2cm3 of Biuret solution to sample 3. Sample contains proteins if colour goes from blue to pink/purple |
Describe the Sudan III Test | 1. Transfer 5cm3 of food sample to test tube 2. Add 3 drops of Sudan III solution and gently shake tube 3. If lipids present, solution will stain them and a bright red layer will form at top of mixture |
What colour change takes place in the Benedict's Test if high glucose concentrations are present? | Blue -------> Brick-Red |
What colour change takes place in the Iodine Solution if starch is present? | Brown-orange ------> Black/Blue-Black |
What colour change takes place in the Biuret Test if protein is present? | Blue -----> Pink/Purple |
What will appear if lipids are present in the Sudan III Test? | A bright red top layer |
