Genetic Crosses
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mendels 1st Law | Each characteristic is controlled by a pair of alleles. These alleles separate at gamete formation so that each gamete only contains one gene. |
| Mendels 2nd Law | During gamete formation, each member of a pair of alleles is equally likely to combine with either of another pair of alleles. |
| Allele | Different types of the same gene |
| Homozygous | Chromosomes that have the same alleles for a certain gene |
| Heterozygous | Chromosomes that have different alleles for a certain gene |
| Locus | The position of a gene on a chromosome |
| Linked Genes | Genes on the same chromosome |
| Sex Linked Genes | Genes on sex chromosomes |
| Dominant | The allele that gets expressed over the other allele |
| Recessive | The allele that is not expressed in the heterozygous condition |
| Progeny | The offspring of a cross |
| Genotype | The genetic makeup of chromosomes |
| Phenotype | The physical appearance of expressed genes |
