| niche | how an organism obtains its food, the type of food the organism eats, and what other organisms eat it |
| competition | the struggle between organisms to survive as they use the same limited resources |
| predation | an interaction in which one organism kills another for food or nutrients |
| symbiosis | any relationship in which two species live closely together |
| commensalism | type of symbiosis in which one species benefits and the other species is neither helped nor harmed |
| mutualism | type of symbiosis in which both species benefit |
| parasitism | type of symbiosis in which one organism is living with, on, or inside another organism and is harming it |
| adaptation | an inherited trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment |
| predator | an organism that hunts down and kills another for food |
| prey | an organism that is being hunted or killed for food |
| host | the organism that is being harmed in a parasitic relationship |
| parasite | the organism that benefits in a parasitic relationship |
| natural selection | when individuals with unique characteristics that are well suited for an environment tend to survive and produce more offspring with those same traits |
| camouflage | ability to blend in with surroundings |
