Chapter 8 Part 2

Honors Biology Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Meiosis a process by which special cells found in gonads divide and reduce the diploid number of chromosomes by one half, producing gametes
Meiocyte cells found in gonads involved in meiosis with diploid number of chromosomes
Gonads sex organs involved in meiosis
Haploid half the normal number of chromosomes
Gamates special sex cells produced during meiosis with haploid number of chromosomes
Fertilization union of the male and female gametes combining two sets of genetic material to produce a zygote
Zygote a fertilized egg
Testes male gonad found in animals
Ovary female gonad found in animals and planst
Anther male gonad found in plants
Homologous Chromosomes matched pairs of chromosomes that contain genes for the same trait in the same positions on the pair
Paternal Chromosomes chromosomes part of the matched pair of homologous chromosomes that contain the father's traits
Maternal Chromosomes chromosomes part of the matched pairs of homologous chromosomes that contain the mother's traits
Synapsis when the homologous pair of chromosomes are attached to the same spindle fiber
Tetra a bundle of interwoven chromatids
Interkinesis the first phase of meiosis II where each cell still has the chromatids from the Interphase of meiosis I, so there is no DNA replication
Gametogenesis the formation of specific gametes
Spermatogenesis the formation of sperm
Acrosome a sac of digestive enzymes in the head of the sperm produced by the Golgi complex to penetrate the egg
Oogenesis the formation of eggs
Spermatogonia a cell that has the potential to be a sperm cell and undergoes mitosis to maintain a constant supply of spermatogonia
Oogonia a cell that undergoes mitosis to build up an original supply of eggs
Primary Spermatocyte a male meiocyte that is committed to dividing and is about to go through meiosis I
Primary Oocyte a female meiocyte that is about to go through meiosis I
Secondary Spermatocyte a cell that's about to go through meiosis II
Secondary Oocyte the cell that received all the yolk supply during meiosis I and and is about to go through meiosis II
Spermazoa / Sperm mature sperm
Ovum the mature egg; only one out of the four cell produced that matures
Polar Bodies cells that don't mature as they put take away the homologous chromosomes or the chromatids
Follicle a group of cells that help the egg mature, build up yolk supply, and protect the egg
Crossing Over chromatids of homologous chromosomes exchange segments during synapsis, producing recombinants
Recombinants chromosomes that have new combinations of genes that aren't present in the parents
Independent Assortment chromosomes from each parent being reshuffled into different combinations in the offspring

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
