Flower | The part of a plant that blossoms. This produces the seeds that can become new plants. |
Fruit | This develops from a plant’s flowers. The part of a flowering plant that contains the seeds. The skin may be thin, tough, or hard. Its insides are often sweet and juicy. But some are dry, like nuts. |
Leaf | This part produces food for the plant through a process called photosynthesis. |
Root | A part of a plant that holds the plant in the ground and keep it upright. They take water and food from the soil. They also store food for the plant. |
Stem | This part supports the plant and holds it up towards the light. It transports water and minerals from the roots and glucose (plant food) in order to help the plant grow. |
Seeds | In flowering plants, a fruit surrounds these. They need the right conditions to germinate, such as water, space, and temperature. |
Spores | Instead of seeds, these are the way fungi, ferns, and mosses reproduce. |
Pollen | A yellow substance that contains the male reproductive cells of a plant. It is held on top of the stamen, the male reproductive part. |
Pistil | Female reproductive part of a plant. When pollen is passed on to this part, it travels to the ovary to fertilize and make new seeds. |
Pollination | Transferring pollen from one plant to pistil of another plant. Some factors that help include bees, moths, wasps, and butterflies. |
Fertilization | When the pollen reaches the ovary of another flower and join with the egg cell. This part of process allows new seeds to be created. |
Seed Dispersal | Transferring seeds from a plant to other locations. Some factors that help include wind, water, and animals. |
Germination | When a seed is in the right conditions, it being to grow into a new plant. |
Petals | Colorful part of the plant that attracts pollinators |
Cone | Part of a nonflowering plant that contains seeds |
Conifers | Plants that produce cones. |
