TermDefinition
Macromolecule A large molecule, such as a protein or nucleic acid, composed of smaller subunits
Maintenance The process of preserving or sustaining something in its existing state or condition
Matter Anything that has mass and occupies space
matter cycle The cycling of matter through ecosystems, involving its transformation and recycling
Meiosis A type of cell division that produces haploid gametes with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell
meiosis I The first division of meiosis, separating homologous chromosomes
meiosis II The second division of meiosis, separating sister chromatids
Metaphase The stage of cell division where chromosomes align in the middle of the cell
Methane A colorless, odorless gas produced by anaerobic decay and digestion
Microbes Microscopic organisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi
Mitochondria Organelles responsible for producing energy in eukaryotic cells
Mitochondrion One mitochondria, the site of cellular respiration
Mitosis The process of cell division in which two identical daughter cells are produced from a single parent cell
mitotic phase (M) The phase of the cell cycle where mitosis and cytokinesis occur
Molecule A group of atoms bonded together, forming the smallest unit of a chemical compound
monohybrid cross A genetic cross involving one trait
Monosomy A genetic condition where an individual has one copy of a chromosome instead of the usual two
Morphology The form and structure of organisms and their parts
mRNA Messenger RNA, a type of RNA that carries genetic information from DNA to the ribosome
Multicellular Consisting of more than one cell
muscle cell A cell specialized for contraction and movement
Mutagen An agent that causes genetic mutation, such as radiation or chemicals
Mutation A change in the DNA sequence of an organism
Mutualism An interaction between two organisms where both benefit
NAD+ electron acceptor involved in cellular respiration
NADH The reduced form of NAD+, carrying electrons to the electron transport chain in cellular respiration
NADP+ The hydrogens run off on this molecule involved in photosynthesis
NADPH The hydrogen carrier in photosynthesis
natural selection The process by which organisms with advantageous traits are more likely to survive and reproduce
Niche The role or function of an organism within its environment
nitrogen (N) A chemical element essential for life, found in proteins and nucleic acids
Nondisjunction The failure of chromosomes to separate properly during cell division
nuclear membrane The membrane surrounding the nucleus of a cell
nucleic acid A molecule, such as DNA or RNA, composed of nucleotides and carrying genetic information
Nucleotide The building block of nucleic acids, consisting of a sugar, phosphate group, and nitrogenous base
Nucleus The organelle in eukaryotic cells that contains the genetic material
