| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Long bone | Greater Length than width |
| Flat bone | Thin bone that usually consists of parallel plates: compact and spongy bone |
| Short bone | Nearly equal in length and width |
| Irregular bone | Completely shaped: does not fit into any of the previous categories |
| Axial skeleton | Bones that lie in the long axis of the body (torso) |
| Appendicular skeleton | Bones that make up the arms, legs, shoulder, and hip gridles |
| Flexion | Decrease the angle at a joint. Bending |
| Extension | Increases the angle at a joint. Straightening |
| Adduction | Moving towards the midline |
| Abduction | Moving away from the midline |
| Supination | Rotating the forearm so palm faces up |
| Pronation | Rotating the forearm so palm faces down |
| Plantarflexion | Superior surface of foot moves away from the shin |
| Dorsiflexion | Superior surface of foot approaches skin |
