Brody Cell Test

QuestionAnswer
four differences between animal and plant cells 1) animal cell is round and plant cell is rectangular 2) animal cell has many small vacuoles and plant has one big one 3) plants have a cell wall and animal cells don't 4) plants have chloroplasts and animals cells don't
What are the three parts of the CELL THEORY? 1) all living things are made of cells 2) cells are the smallest unit of structure and function 3) cells come from other living cells
organism any living thing
unicellular one cell
multicellular many cells
organelles cell parts
cellular respiration the process that changes food energy into energy that cells can use. Happens in the MITOCHONDRIA
CELL MEMBRANE A protective covering that surrounds, protects and controls what goes in and out.
CYTOPLASM A jelly like substance that fills the cell and holds the organelles.
NUCLEUS the control center or "the brain of the cell"
CHROMOSOMES contains the blueprints or DNA for the cell
VACUOLES Storage tanks filled with water, food, and waste
E.R. (endoplasmic reticulem) transports materials (proteins)
RIBOSOMES this is where the proteins are made and is also attached to the ER's wall
MITOCHONDRIA the powerhouse of the cell that breaks down food to release energy
CHLOROPLASTS structures that contain a green pigment called chlorophyll and where the plant makes food
CELL WALL surround, protects, and provides structure to plants
Ingestion the taking in of food
Examples of ingestion in animals and plants animals: a mosquito sucking blood out of a dog plants: plants absorb water and other minerals through their roots
digestion breaking down food into usable forms
Examples of digestion in animals and plants animals: a rabbit chews a carrot to give it energy plant: plants use sugars
Circulation transporting materials within the organism
Examples of circulation in animals and plants animals: horse's heart pumps blood for it plants: three roots and veins move water through a plant
Respiration the release of energy by combining oxygen with digested food
Examples of respiration in animals and plants animals: a fish moves its gills to take in oxygen so its cells can make energy plants: take in CO2 through the leaves
Excretion removing waste products
Examples of excretion in animals and plants? animals: a cat pees in a litter box plants: gives off water vapor
Response to stimuli reacting to something new in an environment
Examples of animals and plants responding to stimuli. animals: a resting dog suddenly points its ears plants: plants grow toward light
Movement going from one place to another
Examples of how animals and plants move animals: dog runs to fetch a ball plants: some leaves close up at night
Reproduction making more of one's own kind
Examples of reproduction in animals and plants animals: a cat gives birth to kittens plant: plants make seeds
Growth getting larger and/or changing form
Examples of growth in animals and plants animals: a puppy becomes a dog plants: a plant needs a bigger pot for its roots
