Biology

Biology - Ecology

TermDefinition
Ecosystem The interaction of a community of living organisms (biotic) with the non-living (abiotic) parts of their environment.
Habitat the area in which an organism leaves
Community Two or more different species in an ecosystem
Population The total number of organisms of one species in an ecosystem
Competition (plants) Light, space, water & mineral ions
Competition (animals) Food, mates & territory
Interdependence when each species depend on other species for food, shelter, pollination etc
Adaptations a feature that an organism has that allows it to survive in its ecosystem
Biodiversity the variety of all the different species of organisms in an ecosystem
Producer Start of a food chain, produces glucose through photosynthesis
Primary consumer Eats a producer and is prey of secondary consumer
Secondary consumer Eats and is predator of primary consumer
Tertiary consumer Predator of secondary consumer
Biotic factors Living things (food, predators, pathogens)
Abiotic factors Non-living things (light, temperature, oxygen, wind)
Structural adaptation Part of the body that helps the organism survive. e.g. polar bears have a thick layer of fat for insulation
Functional adaptation How the body operates that helps the organism survive. E.g. camels do not sweat.
Behavioural adaptation A behaviour that helps the organism survive. e.g. desert rats stay in their burrows during the hottest parts of the day.
Evaporation liquid water is turned into water vapour in the atmosphere
Condensation water vapour condenses to form clouds
Precipitation water is deposited from clouds (rain)
Step 1 of carbon cycle Photosynthesis - plants absorb CO2 from atmosphere
Step 2 of carbon cycle Respiration - animals, plants & micro-organisms release CO2 into the atmosphere
Step 3 of carbon cycle Decay - the carbon in dead organisms is released to the atmosphere by micro-organisms respiring.
Step 4 of carbon cycle Combustion - carbon locked in fossil fuels is released as CO2 when fuels are burned.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
