Biology - Respiration
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Respiration | releasing of energy |
| Exothermic | a reaction where energy is GIVEN OUT |
| Endothermic | a reaction where energy is TAKEN IN |
| Aerobic respiration | • Provides energy • Requires oxygen • In mitochondria • Used to break down food molecules |
| Word equation for aerobic respiration | glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water |
| Anaerobic respiration | • Does not require oxygen • Provides less energy that aerobic respiration • Occurs during intense exercise • Only occurs in the cytoplasm of cells |
| Word equation for anaerobic respiration | Glucose -> lactic acid |
| Lactic acid | created from glucose in muscles during anaerobic respiration |
| What does lactic acid cause | fatigue |
| Body’s response to exercise | • Increase in breathing rate • Increase in heart rate • Increase in breath volume |
| Breathing rate | The rate oxygen is taken into the lungs |
| Heart rate | The number of times the heart beats per minute |
| Breath volume | the amount of air breathed in with each breath |
