Respiration releasing of energy
Exothermic a reaction where energy is GIVEN OUT
Endothermic a reaction where energy is TAKEN IN
Aerobic respiration • Provides energy • Requires oxygen • In mitochondria • Used to break down food molecules
Word equation for aerobic respiration glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
Anaerobic respiration • Does not require oxygen • Provides less energy that aerobic respiration • Occurs during intense exercise • Only occurs in the cytoplasm of cells
Word equation for anaerobic respiration Glucose -> lactic acid
Lactic acid created from glucose in muscles during anaerobic respiration
What does lactic acid cause fatigue
Body’s response to exercise • Increase in breathing rate • Increase in heart rate • Increase in breath volume
Breathing rate The rate oxygen is taken into the lungs
Heart rate The number of times the heart beats per minute
Breath volume the amount of air breathed in with each breath
